Don’t worry, I get it all the time, my name is pronounced “Yay-an.”

I’m a mountain runner, guide, endurance coach and a bit of a geek, with a background in engineering and a lifetime of kayaking rivers in remote places. Before coaching and guiding full-time, I spent ten years as a design engineer and almost my whole life chasing water and exploring mountains. Those two worlds shaped how I think: kayaking taught me what its like to push and respect edge of my limits, while engineering taught me how to build simple, elegant solutions to complicated problems. Together, they gave me the mindset I rely on today.

I’ve failed more times than I can remember, but every failure taught me something new, and having a determination and focus that’s probably considered on the abnormal side, has kept me moving forward. Bit by bit, that perseverance led to some moments I’m genuinely proud of; the Dragon’s Back Race (3rd male), the Cape Wrath Ultra, the Mountain Goat Circuit FKT (winter), and a solo, unsupported Paddy Buckley Round.

At the heart of it, I’m someone who’s always trying to do things better. A little smarter, a little simpler, and with a little more curiosity than the day before, in everything I do. I want to share this.
